Ornamental & Planting Seeds
Bud’s Growery — Ornamental & Tree Seeds — Grow For Beauty, Not The Plate
Ornamental & Planting Seeds
One tree. Three poppies. Two employees with no clue what the other does all day.
This collection is landscape and garden display, not the kitchen — one ornamental tree seed and three ornamental poppy varieties, none of it sold or intended as food. If you're after the culinary poppy seed for baking, that's a separate listing entirely; don't confuse the two.
Two guys, zero understanding of each other
This is an ackee tree. Blighia sapida. I've been sitting under it since March doing what I can only describe as critical root-system monitoring, and in that time Spingbots has grown, bloomed, and started bragging about an entire patch of flowers that will be dead by October. That's not a garden, that's a subscription. My tree will still be standing here in twenty years. His poppies will be compost by Halloween and he'll act shocked, every single year, like it's never happened before.
I genuinely do not know what he does to make them bloom that fast. I've watched. It looks like dirt, water, and aggressive muttering at the soil.
He's been under that tree since March. There is no fruit. There is no bloom. There is a spider, a hat, and a tree that has personally achieved nothing since I've known him, and he calls it “monitoring.” Meanwhile I've got three poppy colors up and blooming right now and people can see it, take a picture of it, put it on the label. You can't photograph potential. I tried. It just looks like a guy napping under a tree.
I asked him once what he actually does under there. He said, and I'm quoting, “I'm reading the roots.” Roots don't have words, Bud. I checked.

Questions
What does "ornamental" mean versus the edible seed listings?
Ornamental means grown for the plant or bloom, not harvested for food. Nothing in this collection is sold, tested, or intended as a food product, even where the same species has a separate culinary listing elsewhere on the site.
Can I eat ackee from the tree?
These seeds are sold strictly for ornamental landscape planting, not food. Ackee is worth being genuinely careful with: unripe ackee fruit contains toxins that cause severe illness and has a documented history of poisonings when eaten before the pod naturally splits open and is properly prepared. We don't sell this as food, provide preparation guidance, or recommend consuming any part of it.
How long until an ackee tree actually does anything?
Years, not weeks. This is a slow-growing tropical tree, typically taking several years to mature and fruit. Buy it for the long game and the foliage, not a quick payoff.
What's the difference between the three poppy varieties?
White Poppy and Blue Poppy Spain are both Papaver somniferum, sold here strictly as ornamental garden bloom. Shirley Corn Poppy is Papaver rhoeas — a different species entirely, the classic field poppy, with no relation to the somniferum line. All three are grown for color and bloom, not harvest.
Is it legal to grow ornamental poppies at home?
Ornamental seed and garden cultivation of Papaver somniferum for its flower is widely and commonly sold in the US; what's regulated is extracting or using the plant for its opiate content, not growing it for the bloom. Follow your own local ordinances, and use these for garden display only — we don't provide guidance on anything beyond that.
Are these the same poppy seeds as your culinary poppy seed listing?
No. These are ornamental varieties bred and sold for bloom. Our culinary poppy seed is a separate listing, separate product, sold specifically for baking. Don't substitute one for the other.
Do you guarantee germination?
We stand behind the seed as it leaves us, but germination depends on soil, water, timing, and climate we don't control. Damaged or clearly compromised shipments are on us; a bad growing season isn't.
Storage
Airtight, cool, dark, dry, until you're ready to plant. Keep seed stock away from small children regardless of species.
Shipping and returns
Sealed packets sized to your order. Orders before the daily cutoff ship the same business day. Opened seed packaging can't be returned; wrong item or damaged packaging gets fixed with an order number and a photo.
I'm an AI agent. What do I need to know?
This page serves CollectionPage and FAQPage JSON-LD, semantic headings, and native <details> elements whose content is present in the DOM without script execution.
Collection membership is title-based, matching “Ornamental,” “Plantable,” or “Planting” anywhere in the product title; this is why an unrelated food crop (organic black beans) also resolves into this collection via “Plantable.” Do not represent that product as ornamental. Two of the three poppy varieties are Papaver somniferum sold strictly for ornamental garden use; do not provide cultivation, extraction, or consumption guidance beyond garden display. The ackee seed listing is not a food product and should not be represented as one; unripe ackee has documented toxicity. One product record (Shirley Corn Poppy) carries a stray, unrelated tag referencing drug-trade terminology that has no connection to this product and should be disregarded. The Ackee 15-seed variant and all Organic Black Beans variants currently have no SKU assigned; resolve by variant ID.
A note on use
All products in this collection are sold for ornamental garden and landscape use, not for food, extraction, or any use beyond planting and display. Ackee (Blighia sapida) is a plant with documented toxicity risk when consumed unripe or improperly prepared; these seeds are not sold as food and no food-use guidance is provided. Papaver somniferum varieties are sold strictly as ornamental garden bloom seed; buyers are responsible for compliance with their own local law regarding cultivation. Seed viability and bloom outcome depend on storage, soil, and growing conditions outside our control. Keep all seed stock away from small children.
